Be prepared to do a lot of snuggling and smooching - and perhaps looking longingly into each others eyes. Its a requirement for couples portraits (especially if there are rings involved).
Bring the romance with you.
There's not a button for that in Photoshop!
(Specifically for engagement portraits)
We'll be sure to get some photos that feature that pretty sparkly on your hand - so you might want to make sure your nails are in good shape .
Tell me a bit more about yourself and your partner! What kinds of things do you like doing together? What is your idea of a perfect Sunday?
Props to have on hand
- a favorite book, yours or one you can't wait to
read to little one
- a favorite shawl, pashmina, or blanket
- baby toys, shoes, etc.
- fresh flowers
Materntiy clothing suggestions
You'll probably want to try a few different looks. I recommend loose drawstring pants, either white or black, and a spaghetti strap tank as a basis to start from
Have a pair of blue jeans on hand and one of your partner's shirts, preferably something button down-ish
Go easy on hair and make up (think clean and fresh more so than glamor shots!) Many pictures will feature close-up shots of your hands- so neat & clean nails.
If other family members will be in photos - I recommend similar clothing for everyone. Blue jeans and white/black shirts usually work well. (Black shirts make for nice contrast against pale bellies and vice-versa)
With older babies and family portraits there are two ways to go:
To Match?
If you decide to go matching - blue jeans and black or white shirts make for a classic picture that will be appealing for years to come. Matching doesnt mean that everyone needs identical shirts. Dad's can be a white button-down shirt - Mom in a white sweater or blouse, heck, even a casual white dress.
or Not To Match...
If you decide to not match - the thing is you still need to look good together. So proceed carefully! Parents should be more understated than the kids - so Mom and Dad might opt for darker, solid colors, and dress the kids in colorful stripes.
EVERYONE SHOULD BE COMFORTABLE
I can't tell you how important it is for your kids to feel good about the clothes they are wearing. While I'm always willing to take a few 'traditional' family portraits, I find that the more genuine moments are to be found in play. So if your kids get dressed up often, then go for it. But if theyre normally running rampant in pants and sneakers and t-shirts that is where I'm more likely to find natural happy faces!
Costume changes are fine (and encouraged) and are allowed for within duration of your session. It actually provides a nice break from the camera and attention.
Newborns
One of the best things about little babies is their spankin' new skin - so lets be sure to get some shots in just a plain white diaper. It might be a little chilly for newborns, so its helpful to make sure that the room is a comfortable temperature. For parents of newborns I recommend long sleeve black or white shirts. The goal is to emphasize your hands and your little one's little features.
